Photographs from the Memphis World, 1949-1964.   Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, 1934 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38104.  The photographic exhibition is from the Memphis World, an African American newspaper published from 1931 to 1973, that chronicled the complexity and variety of its readers’ lives.   Behind the seemingly ordinary images is evidence of the courage, dignity, and ingenuity that citizens brought to bear on the living conditions in the Jim Crow South.  For more information, visit www.brooksmuseum.org.

Fall Book Serial - Ghost From the Past: The Mystery of Latham House.  This spine-tingling thriller, written by Mary Maden,  is a story full of wonderful characters (including a ghost!), mystery, intrigue, and nail-biting suspense.  Readers will be hanging onto the edge of their seats through each of the 12 thrilling chapters!  All chapters finish with a cliffhanger ending that will leave your readers wanting more.  The suggested reading level is 3rd – 9th grades.   This Newspaper in Education book serial will be  available to classrooms via The Commercial Appeal’s e-Appeal in Education. The e-Appeal is an “exact replica” of The Commercial Appeal.  Students can log onto any computer with Internet access and flip through pages and skim headlines, just as they would with the traditional newspaper.   The serial still will appear in the regular published newspaper, but papers will no longer be delivered to the schools.  For more information, visit http://nieonline.com/memphis/.)
